ParticipantMiguel, thanks for asking, I finished my 6 month pilot project and saw 11 patients and completed 5 manuscripts. Changing health conditions and problems with introspection are primary reasons for non-completion. For comparision, a recently published study by the San Diego Hospice covering August 28, 2009 and May 28, 2010 stated that 110 referrals were received and of those, 27 patients completed the full protocol.
My recommedation to our Hospice Management was that this work should not be done by volunteers. (and remember, I am one)While I ennumerated several reasons-the sense of always “being on call” and the absolute need for quality control oversight were two key reasons.
Since the above recommendation I have spent considerable time developing a training component that involves Board representation, and staff orientation, plus training for our Dignity Therapy Gudes–one of whom is an experienced nurse and the other an MSW.
Miguel, do you have a program in place? Thank you for your energy and committment to this poweful program. and thank you for being such an excellent communicator. Michael

ParticipantBridget, simply wonderful to see your posting and hear of your progress!!! On August 22 I will be training a couple of folks who have not done this before either and I need your help. Could you please tell me the approach you used for editing. My people will be reading Harvey’s chapter on this topic and I will talk about my own experiences, but your insights and challenges would be invaluable to me.
Just seeing your name today made me smile and I want to thank you personally for taking the time to post. Warm regards to you, MichaelMichael Wirth
ParticipantMiguel, you’re a great communicator! So here are two questions:
1. I have written to each workshop attendee and heard from almost 100%. I mentioned that I have six months of program development and implementation experience that I would like to begin writing about and sharing, should others find it useful. Almost everyone said to send e-mails–and that they weren’t very good about web sites. I could write entries and then send an e-mail to everyone saying I had posted. Any advice on this one?
2. Also since I want to talk about my real life stuff is that the right thing for this site and I have a couple of developed pieces that would be attachments. So it seems like my length would be overwhelming.
I need advice and consel on what my next step should be. And yes, “Michael, don’t take yourself so seriously,” would also be considered advice.
The workshop experience was powerful, in no small part because of people like you who intuitively know the power of listening. Miguel, you really make a difference. -
